Houseboat
A
house boat is about 67 feet in length and has a width of around 13 feet in
the middle. The materials that go into the making are all local and Eco
friendly bamboo poles, coconut fibre ropes, bamboo mats, coir carpets etc.
The main wood used is "Anjili". The house boats have fully furnished
single and double rooms with sundeck, private balcony with comfortable
chairs, kitchen and toilet with WC. In addition there is also separate
rest room for the crew. Traditional lanterns are used as lights. The crew
includes a chef and two oarsmen. The cuisine is traditional Kerala flavour
with the local specialities; delicious fish and prawns. There are single
bedroom houseboats for two people and two bedroom houseboats for four
people. |

Thangasseri:
(5km from Kollam) Once a British enclave, this seaside village shelters the
ruins of an old Portuguese fort and churches built in the 18th century. The Thangasseri
Lighthouse which is 144 ft high, constructed in 1519 by the British, is open to visitors from
1530 -1730 hrs. |

Thirumullavaram Beach:
(6km north of Kollam. Open 0500 - 1130 hrs, 0400-2030hrs).
This secluded beach is a beautiful picnic
centre. |

Alumkadavu:
(28km north of-Kollam) Alumkadavu is where the
first houseboats in India were built. Every day except Sundays, from 0800 to 1700 hrs,
you can see the Grafting of Kettuvalloms at the houseboat-building yard. Alumkadavu is also a coir-making
centre. |

Thenmala:
(66km east of Kollam) Covered by dense forests, rubber and tea plantations, Thenmala is home to India's first planned eco-tourism project. It has
a leisure zone that includes winding pathways, a sway bridge, a sculpture garden and a
boardwalk; a culture zone with an amphitheatre and a musical
fountain; an adventure zone with trekking trails, rock climbing, rappelling etc.
Other attractions are the Deer Rehabilitation Centre
and the adjacent Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary. |

Palaruvi Waterfalls:
(75km from Kollam. Open 0800-1800hrs) Palaruvi which
means stream of milk makes its way down the rocks, from a height of 300ft. The
Palaruvi woods are a beautiful picnic spot. |

Varkala Beach:
(45km - l'/2 hrs) A beach destination, it is
also an important Hindu pilgrimage centre. The Papanasham Beach
fringed by red laterite cliffs, the cool mineral springs, serene
backwaters, the 2000-year-old Sree Janardhana
Swamy Temple, a century old tunnel and a nature
Cure Centre are the main attractions here. |
